During this one-hour event, ODPHP will present on two Healthy People 2030 featured objectives related to violence prevention and firearm safety. The webinar will also feature a presentation by the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services and a presentation by Polk County Health Department discussing intervention strategies including their firearm safety program, Talk it Up, Lock It Up.
The two Healthy People 2030 objectives to be featured during the webinar are:
Reduce gun carrying among adolescents — IVP‑12
Exposure to air pollution is linked to many health problems, including cancer, respiratory diseases, and heart disease. Outdoor air pollution is also linked to early death. Taking action to prevent air pollution through laws like the Clean Air Act can lead to major reductions in pollution and help prevent many serious health problems.
Reduce firearm-related deaths — IVP‑13
Firearm-related injuries are a major cause of death in the United States, including deaths from homicides, suicides, and unintentional injuries. There are disparities in firearm-related deaths by age, sex, and race/ethnicity. Comprehensive state- and community-level prevention strategies are critical for reducing the risk for violence that leads to firearm-related deaths.
