The Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF) recommends tenant-based housing voucher programs to improve health and health-related outcomes for adults. These programs help households with very low incomes afford safe and sanitary housing in the private market — specifically, the programs cover a substantial portion of rent. Households can use the vouchers to move to neighborhoods with more opportunities. CPSTF finds societal benefits exceed the cost of tenant-based housing voucher programs that serve families with young children who are living in public housing by providing pre-move counseling and moving families to neighborhoods with greater opportunities.
