Controlling blood sugar levels (also called glycemic control) is a key element of managing diabetes. Studies suggest that periodontitis — swelling and infection of the gums — may affect how well people with diabetes can control their blood sugar. People with diabetes may also be more likely to experience periodontitis. In this Cochrane systematic review, researchers found that periodontitis treatment helps lower blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.
