Reduce the proportion of adults aged 45 years and over who have lost all their teeth — OH‑05 Data Methodology and Measurement

About the National Data

Data

Baseline: 7.9 percent of adults aged 45 years and over had lost all of their natural teeth in 2013-16

Target: 5.4 percent

Numerator
Number of adults aged 45 years and over with a clinical confirmation of having lost all their natural teeth, including third molars.
Denominator
Number of adults aged 45 years and over.
Target-setting method
Minimal statistical significance
Target-setting method details
Minimal statistical significance, assuming the same standard error for the target as for the baseline.
Target-setting method justification
Trend data were not available for this objective. The standard error was used to calculate a target based on minimal statistical significance, assuming the same standard error for the target as for the baseline. This method was used because it was a statistically significant improvement from the baseline.

Methodology

Methodology notes

The case definition is "lost all teeth due to caries or periodontal diseases"; however, because it is not feasible to identify the cause of tooth loss, the absence of 32 natural teeth (including third molars) is used as a proxy. The measurement protocol described for Healthy People 2000 is still in use.

History

Comparable HP2020 objective
Modified, which includes core objectives that are continuing from Healthy People 2020 but underwent a change in measurement.
Changes between HP2020 and HP2030
This objective differs from Healthy People 2020 objective OH-4.2 in that objective OH-4.2 tracks persons aged 65 to 74 years, while this objective tracks persons aged 45 years and over.
