Goal: Prevent fractures and disabilities related to osteoporosis.
In the United States, about 1 in 10 people age 50 years and older have osteoporosis.1 Healthy People 2030 focuses on preventing and treating osteoporosis.
People with osteoporosis have weak bones, putting them at higher risk for fractures that can lead to serious health problems and death. Women are much more likely than men to have osteoporosis. There’s no cure for osteoporosis, but treatment with drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can reduce fracture rates.
Screening older adults for osteoporosis is key to catching it early and preventing bone fractures. And strategies to help people eat healthy and get physical activity can help prevent osteoporosis.
