Summary

End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) often causes disability and early death — and it’s associated with high health care costs. People with ESKD who get a kidney transplant are likely to live longer than ESKD patients on dialysis. Increasing kidney transplant rates, managing heart disease, and decreasing the use of catheters for dialysis can reduce the risk of death in people with ESKD.
