Status: Getting worse
Reduce the proportion of adult hemodialysis patients who use catheters as the only mode of vascular access
Data Source: United States Renal Data System (USRDS), NIH/NIDDK
Summary
For patients to get hemodialysis, health care providers need direct access to their bloodstream — or vascular access. Infections are a leading cause of death in hemodialysis patients. Catheter use is associated with a higher risk of infections than other types of vascular access — and worse health outcomes overall. Interventions to decrease catheter use in dialysis patients are important for reducing infections and improving health outcomes.
